Universal Music Group is “rebooting” the music cd format. They have come up with three tiers of CD from deluxe to bargain. The deluxe CD’s are stronger, more durable jewel boxes.
The middle tier of Universal’s CDs will be sold in a new “super jewel box” designed to be stronger and more durable than the standard jewel box. Universal Music plans to absorb the extra manufacturing costs, estimated to be about 3 to 5 euro cents per unit.
Oh boy, super jewel boxes! I can’t wait to get one. Give me a break. I cannot tell you the last time I bought an actual physical cd at a record store. And when I do, I digitally rip it and never look at the CD again. I don’t need better jewel boxes. I need better, faster and cheaper digital distribution.
